Controller Moving on Its Own? That's Drift.
If your character moves on its own, your camera spins when you're not touching the stick, or your aim won't sit still — you've got controller drift. It's one of the most frustrating (and most common) issues with PS5 DualSense and PS4 DualShock controllers, and it's something we repair regularly at P&T Repair Department.
What Is Controller Drift?
Stick drift happens when your controller registers movement on the analog stick even when you're not touching it. It's caused by wear inside the potentiometer — the small component that tracks the stick's position. Over time, dust, wear, and use degrade this part, and the controller starts sending "phantom" inputs.
Why DualSense Controllers Drift
The PS5's DualSense controllers are fantastic, but the analog stick modules wear down with heavy use — especially in fast-paced games where you're constantly on the sticks. It's not something you did wrong; it's a known wear issue across the industry.
How We Fix Controller Drift
At P&T Repair Department, our technicians can:
- Test the controller to confirm and measure the drift
- Open the controller safely without damaging the shell
- Replace the worn analog stick module with a quality replacement
- Recalibrate and test every direction before returning it to you
A stick module replacement is far cheaper than buying a brand-new controller — and you keep the controller you're already comfortable with.
Should I Just Buy a New Controller?
You can — but DualSense controllers aren't cheap, and a repair usually costs a fraction of a replacement. Plus, if your controller has custom grips, a faceplate, or you've just got it broken in the way you like, a repair keeps what you love and fixes what's broken. We'll give you a free estimate so you can decide.
